Fitness Motivation: Remember ‘Why’
Motivation comes and goes, and you cannot rely on motivation to keep up with your fitness goals. You will not always be motivated, and that is okay. Discipline and creating healthy habits will keep you going more than motivation.
However, from time to time, you need a little extra motivation. My biggest tip is to remember why you started in the first place. In my previous blog post, I discussed my overall mental health, how things are going right now, and how I am reviving my motivation to work toward my fitness goals.
In this post, I will dive into how remembering why you started can help you when you’re lacking motivation. This is something super personal to each individual, so remember that my reasons may differ from yours. It is okay to have your reasons to do anything, and no one owes anyone an explanation as to why.
Your Why
When you take the time to determine why you want to do something, this is something you can return to when you lack some motivation. You want to dig down deep for your reasons why. There are no right answers to why you are motivated to do something. It does not matter to anyone else but YOU why you want to do something. What matters is that it helps you keep up with your goals and help motivate you.
My ‘Why’
Overall longevity. I want to be healthy and mobile well into old age to continue to do the things I love.
Proper nutrition and consistent workouts are helpful for my overall physical health. I want to be healthy long-term, so I want to take care of my body.
Working out is time for me to spend doing something for just myself.
Physical appearance
Doing things for me is helpful for my overall mental health. I want to continue caring for myself and working on my hobbies. Skincare and proper hygiene are going to be helpful for my future self.
Overall
As you can see, I have several reasons why I want to work towards my fitness goals, including health and appearance. These things are personal to me, and it really does not matter what you or anyone else thinks about why I want to work toward my fitness goals. Remember your reasons and let go of the expectations that you MUST do things for specific reasons. My reasons will not be your reasons. Your reasons will never be my reasons. Everyone will have different reasons.
I find that my reasons will always be health and wellness for longevity. But this isn’t enough to help increase motivation when it is lacking. So remembering the other reasons I want to work toward my fitness goals helps significantly. My biggest reason right now is how my body looks and feels. I am unhappy with how my body looks, and I am okay with that being one of my reasons. Call it shallow if you want, but I don’t care. I don’t find anything wrong with having physique goals.
