My Workout Essentials

As 2021 begins, determining whether you want to workout at the gym or at home has become a hot topic. For me, last year was very difficult to maintain any type of fitness routine. My gym closed, then reopened and I was not interested in going to the gym during the COVID-19 pandemic. So I began running and doing home workouts and I’ve narrowed down some workout essentials for a minimalist home gym.

Yoga Mat

No matter what workout you are doing, a yoga mat is a must. Not only does it provide support, but it also provides a mobile workout space. My favorite yoga mats are from Gaiam and Manduka.

Dumbbells/Resistance Bands

Two or three sets of dumbbells can help create a KILLER workout at home. If space is limited or you need a much more budget-friendly option, long and short resistance bands may be your go-to. Both options can provide a great workout no matter your fitness level. I have a combination of both. I use dumbbells and short resistance for leg day, and I use long resistance bands for arm day.

Nike Training/Running Apps

I LOVE THESE APPS.

Seriously, the Nike Training app is my favorite workout app. All of the workouts are so challenging, provides me with new ways of working out and tons of mobility work. Also, did I mention it’s free? I am currently doing a 6-week HIIT program that provides 3 workouts a week. It is super challenging, and I will probably redo the same program once I am finished with it. I have been modifying everything so far, so I feel that after 6 weeks, the program may become easier, so I do not have to modify as much.

The Nike Running app is amazing. I absolutely love the guided runs. I used to think that I couldn’t run because of my asthma, but after doing several of the guided runs, I find that I can run two miles at a comfortable pace without stopping. It really is absolutely amazing!

Fitness Tracker

I love having a fitness tracker. Though this one is not 100% necessary, I feel that it is a beneficial tool to help me track my workouts. My favorite thing has a way to track my runs. My favorite fitness tracker is my Apple Watch. It allows me to connect my Bluetooth headphones, download a playlist, and pick a workout from the Nike Run Club app, and leave my phone at home. The Fitbit Versa does very similar functions but works great with other apps such as Pandora for music and Fitbit app for workout tracking.

Headphones

Headphones help me stay focused. Though in a home gym setting, it is nice to blast workout music of choice. No matter if I workout at home, go for a run, or workout at a gym I MUST have headphones. My favorite headphones are the Powerbeats Pro.
