Why is Fitness and Nutrition Important

Fitness and nutrition are so necessary, not only for your present self but for your future self as well. We all know this, but very few people tend to understand the extent of the impact that eating a balanced diet and staying active has on the quality of life. Most people may not feel the effects of a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle at a young age. But as you age, you will feel it more and more every day.

I know for me, I do choose to eat healthily and work out for these reasons. While I may have fitness goals along the way, the simple, most basic goal is health and longevity. When I live a healthy and active lifestyle, I feel my best.

Health

Health is probably the biggest reason fitness and nutrition are essential; this is no secret. But how do nutrition and fitness affect your health? When you’re young, it doesn’t seem like living a sedentary lifestyle and eating whatever you want doesn’t affect your health. But as you age, those unhealthy habits will affect your body significantly. Most people account for that as simply aging; think about it like your car: If you are always taking care of your vehicle, changing the oil, and doing routine maintenance work, your car will run and last significantly longer. Your body is no different: if you fuel your body with nutritious food, get adequate sleep, and move it regularly, you will find that as you age, your mobility and overall energy will be higher.

Years of unhealthy eating can create numerous health problems; many are internal, unseen health issues such as high cholesterol, heart issues, and low energy. But the health issues easily seen from poor nutrition may be under or excessive body fat. Skin can be affected by poor nutrition as well. Many health issues can appear later in age after many years of poor nutrition. This is why nutrition is SOO important. It doesn’t matter if you’ve spent years and years eating poorly nutritious foods; starting to create new healthy habits today can make all the difference later in life.

Regular exercise can do wonders for mobility as you age. Everyday movements and posture can affect mobility as well. Whether you sit or stand for long periods, how you sit or stand can affect your mobility as you age. The body is so connected in ways you wouldn’t even realize. Your foot position can affect your back, for example. Exercise can help to increase mobility and change your day-to-day movement patterns. However, being mindful of your posture throughout the day can be an essential factor in mobility, and strength training and yoga are great ways to improve your mobility.

Mental Health

Exercise is a hugely underrated way to elevate your mood. I know that exercise allows me to provide a way to focus on what I am doing at the moment. Whether I am strength training, running, or doing yoga, I am in the moment. Nothing else matters; my to-do list is out of my mind. Overall, exercise helps my mood. That endorphin rush you get during and after a workout helps elevate my mood. When I do not do any exercise for too many days in a row, I have more anxiety and overall feeling of sadness. Exercise is the most significant underrated antidepressant.

Longevity

As you age, living a healthy and active lifestyle can increase your longevity and mobility to live your life. Simple movement patterns are more accessible when you fuel and care for your body will help the long-term quality of life.

“Do something today that your future self will thank you for”

I find that quote so inspiring. Hard work will pay off in the future, but you also have to live in the moment, and I feel like taking care of yourself is doing both. You are doing good for yourself now as well as for your future self.
