Goals for 2021

2020 was a weird year, no doubt about that. Everyone had their own experience navigating the continuous changes that this past year brought to us. I just wanted to take a moment to reflect on my 2020 experiences before getting into my goals for the year 2021.

Overall, it was not a bad year for me. It was stressful, to say the least, but it was not too bad. I work at a grocery store, fear losing my job due to government-sanctioned lockdowns. I met a wonderful man just before the pandemic really set in full motion. I couldn’t be more grateful for him as he has been my rock throughout the entire year. We went on many backpacking trips together and fell in love with the activity.

Since the grocery store business isn’t where I want to be with my life. It’s not a bad place to work, but not my aspiration. So I began this blog; I got my nutrition and personal training certifications. So I can begin to grow my business. I’m not sure that I would have taken the leap to begin growing my business this past year had we not had a pandemic.

There were many positive things that I have happened during the past year, but let me tell you, it was stressful, to say the least. I am an anxious person, so stress and anxiety levels were extremely high. I decided I needed to sell my home to get out of debt and invest in my business. That was probably the hardest decision I’ve ever made, but thinking about the long term is a good decision. I lived in a studio condo, which I never intended to be my long term home, but I wasn’t originally planning to sell it as fast as I did. But with two cats, a dog, a bearded dragon, plus my boyfriend and myself, it is just not a big enough space. So since we wanted to move in together, selling my place to move into a bigger space was much more ideal.

As 2021 begins, I realize that the pandemic is still very prominent, but I still wanted to set some goals for the year. When I set my goals, I want to think about setting SMART goals. By setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bout goals, I can track progress as the year goes on. Now, I may not get super specific with my goals here, but know that I will be more specific with my goals as the year goes on. All of these goals below are long term goals, and I will have many short term goals that will help me achieve those long term goals. I set different goals for my business, fitness, and personal goals.

Business Goals

As I grow my business with nutrition and personal training, I set some goals for the year. I’ve organized these goals as SMART goals and specifics for myself, but here I’m just going to provide an overview of the goals.

  1. Grow my Instagram

    Plans to grow my Instagram include daily posts: informational posts, workouts, promoting blog posts, and promote programs. The year-end goal is to grow by 20%. I will track progress and create new goals each month.

  2. Grow my Blog

    Plans to grow my blog include writing 3 posts a week beginning in April. January-March will have weekly blog posts. Blog posts will be all things nutrition, fitness, and outdoor activities related topics.

  3. Help 1-2 Clients Monthly

    As I grow my Instagram and blog to promote my services, I aim to get 1-2 clients each month and write nutrition and personal training online coaching programs.

  4. Start a YouTube Channel

    Beginning in June, I want to start a YouTube channel with follow-along workout videos each week.

Fitness Goals

Fitness goals will change each month as I track my progress, but overall need to create a solid home fitness routine that includes strength, endurance, and recovery training. Jumping straight into a huge fitness routine that changes everything all at once is not achievable, so I will begin small and slowly add on to it.

  1. Fitness Routine at Home

    I haven’t had much of a solid routine because of the ever-changing things of 2020. But since having a fitness routine does so much for my mental health, I need to get back into it. I’ll begin small by going for a 30 min walk with my dog every day. Then slowly incorporate the following into my routine:

    1. Strength Training

      Building muscle and gaining strength, this one will change as I progress through the year. My goal is to strength train 4 times a week.

    2. Cardiovascular Endurance

      I have asthma, which makes any cardio difficult. But I’ve learned to enjoy running, and it does positively improve my asthma. Since I love backpacking and hiking at high elevations, my goal is to work on my cardiovascular endurance by running 2 times a week. I also want to go backpacking and/or hiking as much as possible this spring/summer.

    3. Recovery Training

      Recovery is so important for any goal, and typically it’s one thing most people overlook in their training. I know that I usually do. So with my recovery training, I aim to do at least 10 minutes of stretching before every workout and yoga one day a week.

  2. Nutrition

    Overall I aim to eat healthily and improve my daily nutrition habits. Typically this comes easy to me, so this will come easy to me. I need to be consistent with my caloric intake. I’m not a huge fan of tracking, but to become consistent, it can be a helpful tool to create consistency.

Personal Goals

  1. Create a Daily Routine

    I function best on routine. Though I do not need to plan every single second of my day, I do need a general routine for my day. I need to set timers for how long I am sitting, how often I take the dog outside, when I workout, and stop working.

  2. Finish School

    I have 3 classes left, 10 weeks total. I got this! I’ll have my bachelor’s in business administration with a focus on digital marketing.

  3. Read More

    I’ve gotten in the habit of watching tv before bed, and that is not how I want to spend my time before bed. I love reading, and I find that it is a better way for me to fall asleep. So I want to spend around 30 minutes each night reading before bed.

I find that so inspiring. Hard work will pay off in the future, but you also have to live in the moment, and I feel like taking care of yourself is doing both. You are doing good for yourself now as well as for your future self.
